The Open: a ten-question math placement test
Ten questions that adapt as you answer: get one right and the next is harder, miss one and it eases off. At the end you get a level and a suggested place to start. It is free and needs no account.
The five levels
- Warm-up. Arithmetic and the language of algebra. The place to build the fluency everything else assumes.
- Foundational. Comfortable with school algebra and geometry. Ready for functions, trigonometry and the run-up to calculus.
- Fundamental. Solid through calculus, basic probability and linear algebra — the first two years of a university sequence.
- Advanced. Working confidently in a specialism: real analysis, algorithms, stochastic processes or their neighbours.
- Specialized. Operating at graduate level, where the questions stop being exercises and start being research tools.
